Goal Loop

Principle:

Checking in with your goal periodically

LeAnn Hunt explains Goal Looping

When early American Pioneers were crossing the plains, a man named William Clayton was tasked with creating a map for those who would follow. Each day the crews estimates of how far they’d traveled were so varied as not to be useful. He measured the circumference of a wheel, tied a cloth marker to a spoke, and began to count the thousands of turns the wheel would make that day. At the end of the day he knew exactly how far they’d traveled and could make an accurate map. Our goal pursuits can be long and complex, some spanning a lifetime. Goal loops are a way to check in with your goal periodically to see how far you’ve come and what you need to do next.

Goal loops have 3 questions.

  • What went well and why?
  • What didn’t go well?
  • What did you learn?
