When we are hard on ourselves, we sometimes hear the advice: treat yourself the way you would a good friend. I love the idea of talking to myself like I talk to my friends when they are hurting. The warmth of it reminds me how hard I can be on myself sometimes. It’s good advice, especially in those moments when we are hard on ourselves, but does it always work?
